About a mile southeast of the Sunset Strip in Los Angeles, across Santa Monica Blvd. – one will find the “La Cienega Design Quarter,” or LCDQ for short. And while the strip is well remembered for it’s hard rocking roots with clubs like Whisky A Go Go and the Viper Room still serving up plenty of musical talent on tap; the beautifully posh design quarter is a welcome contrast for a city that’s grown up over the past few decades to be one of the world’s premiere venues for interior design. Of the many soirees hosted in the Design Quarter every year, the biggest and brightest is the “LCDQ - Legends” event which includes over 30 activities in its three-day run - bringing thousands of design and architecture enthusiasts, tastemakers and editors together from across the country and around the world. Over 60 showrooms are also involved in collaborating with designers on transforming their window displays into works of art for all to behold.
This year, STARK partnered with designers James Magni and Jason Kalman, who together helm the Los Angeles-based firm of Magni Kalman Design to produce a “Bespoke Jewel Box” of curated pieces including a 10x14 Fresco Collection handmade rug from the new STARK Sapphire product line. Their superior stylings, once described by The New York Times as “trim, tailored, and practical as a Jil Sander suit,” have put the firm on a number of enviable lists including Architectural Digest’s AD100, Robb Report’s Top 40 designers worldwide, and Luxe Magazine’s Gold List. At the STARK Showroom, we were hosting the May 4th, Elle Décor “Power Lunch” with Editor in Chief Michael Boodro, and also the May 5th, Nate Berkus led keynote “Collected: Living with the Things You Love in a Well Curated Home." But, before we could let the good times roll –there was an important matter of business to attend to– our window, needed dressing.
The Magni team had that well-in-hand of course, and as the team at Stark checked on catering, sent out invitations, and stuffed gift bags; the Magni team sprung to work on crafting a window that took fourth in the overall competition, as voted by those in attendance and across the country – out of nearly 70 showrooms involved.
The inspiration behind the window was a jewel box – usually ornamented with necklaces, rings, and fine stones; this one would feature a STARK rug and a number of our fabric selections in dark and moody hues, as well as the exceptional Magni Home Collection of furniture and lighting which have garnered a reputation as some of the most sought after bespoke furnishings in the industry. As stated by the team at Magni: “When the finest craftsmanship, elevated creativity and timeless materials come together, furnishings shine like the brightest jewels.”
Magni’s Home Collection utilizes hand crafted pieces made of the finest materials such as cast bronze, cast glass, fine woods, leather, stone, and in this case even decorative chains. With a modern aesthetic and heirloom quality, the collection is often awarded, including several Interior Design Magazine “Best of the Year” wins.
With the window finished, it was time for the festivities – and of course – all went off without a hitch. Many thanks to the team at Hearst for Elle Décor, Nate Berkus, his keynote panelists, and once again to the Magni Kalman Design team for their work on bringing our window to life. They say if you don’t post it, it didn’t happen – so we posted this on our Instagram @StarkCarpet, to make it official.
